Around the Horn: News and Notes 11/2

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

What is going on, ladies and gents! I hope you are all doing well. On this beautiful Monday, we got some news and notes to go over from the weekend. I enjoy getting to go over the story with you guys and giving my take on that news.

The Tigers are still searching for a Manager as the White Sox recently made their choice in Tony La Russa. A.J. Hinch is the favorite as of 10/29 for the job. I don't love this for many reasons. But as a baseball move for the Tigers where they are at in their rebuild, I think Hinch is an excellent fit as the Astros were in this same spot back around 2013/14/15/16, and then things changed. As long as Hinch doesn't cheat his way there and can gain the team's respect, I think the Tigers may be darkhorse in 2021 for a playoff spot. It is official as of 10/30 that A.J. Hinch is set to be the Tigers' next manager. Let's see where this takes the Tigers as Hinch will need to earn his young team's trust and respect starting now!

-Recently, the White Sox hired Hall of Famer Tony La Russa as their next manager. We have found out since the Bruce Bochy was the NO. 2 pick if La Russa declined. I almost would have liked the fit with Bochy better than La Russa as he has more recent exposure to playing in the World Series with those great Giants teams. The White Sox did decline Edwin Encarnacion's and Gio Gonzalez's options. But they did pick up Leury Garcias.

-The Mets sale is final! NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the MLB Owners approved billionaire Steve Cohen's $2.4BIL purchase of the Mets.

-The Red Sox have been in contact with former manager Alex Core since his suspension ended on Tuesday, 10/27. Again, I'm not too fond of this move because of Cora's history and what he did. I try to take my personal feelings out of it and look at it as a baseball move. The move would be great for Red Sox. With an excellent offensive and defensive core. Sale and E-Rod are coming back from injuries. The Red Sox, with this hire, could land Springer, Brantley, Reddick, or even get Bradley Jr. We will see.

Update 11/1: The final list of candidates for the Red Sox job are: Sam Fuld, James Rowson, Don Kelly, Carlos Mendoza, and Alex Cors

-The League will be canceling owners' meeting in November and winter meetings scheduled for December. Agendas will be conducted virtually. These move area due to the COVID-19 and make sense to keep virtual.

_The Braves are expected to have serious interest in 38YO SP Adam Wainwright in free agency. With Hamels a Free Agent and Soroka working his way back from an injury, this team is on the cusp of another deep playoff run. With Wainwright's experience and leadership, the fit makes sense for the Braves. Both Wainwright and Molina have been in contact with Cardinals as well.

-The Angels have already expressed interest in 2B Kolten Wong. He is a free agent, solid defender, and is the next best 2B Free agent after DJ LeMahieu.

-Take one down and pass it around John Lester. The former Cubs P, who is now a free agent, said a thank you to the fans and bought beers for everyone at 4 Chicago bars over the weekend totalling $47k

-In wholesome news, Orioles 1B Trey Mancini did get reinstated from the 60-day IL is looks to be on track to return after his fight with cancer.

Thank you, guys, for reading. Suppose you would; I'd love if you shared the site, one post, or anything with a friend that loves baseball. If not, that's fine; I appreciate it, and I am grateful for your time. See you soon!
